چکیده

In an inverted T maze, normal rats going for food from one maze arm to the end of maze stem and required to return to the starting point, showed about 9PIo of correct responses (Eukaszewska 1961). From the start to the goal the animal is probably guided visually by the sight of cup, or he learns not to approach the opposite maze arm but t o take a turn. However, when he returns, he must choose between the left and the right path. At the moment of decision animal should remember from which place he started. In other words, at the choice p i n t he responds not to actual stimuli but to the traces of stimuli acting several seconds earlier. Thus the test belongs to category of delayed responses. It has been found (Eukaszewska 1963) that the predelay stimulus determining the correct response is elicited by a turn taken on the way to food. The time between this turn and the choice of return route constitutes the delay period. With the length of maze stem used, the delay is around 3-4 sec. When after several runs to food and back to start, the starting place was transfered to the other maze arm, animals showed a considerable amount of perseverative errors, i.e. they chose the previous return route instead of the path they had just taken to the goal (Eukaszewska 1962). Mishkin (1964) has reported that frontal operates showed qualitatively the same difficulties as normal subjects, but quantitatively enhanced. Thus, in our test a greater number of perseverative errors was expected in frontal rats than in unoperated controls. The returning behavior of frontal rats have been studied previously (Eukaszewska 1968) in a somewhat different design: the start point was changed from day to day remaining at the same place during successive trials of each session. Electrophysiological evidence of two different types of error in the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test.

The specificity of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) for assessing frontal lobe pathology remains controversial, although lesion and cerebral blood flow studies continue to suggest a role for the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in WCST performance. Inconsistencies might derive from the extended use of various WCST scores as equivalent indicators of frontal pathology. In this study, event-re...

Reward stability determines the contribution of orbitofrontal cortex to adaptive behavior.

Animals respond to changing contingencies to maximize reward. The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is important for flexible responding when established contingencies change, but the underlying cognitive mechanisms are debated. We tested rats with sham or OFC lesions in radial maze tasks that varied the frequency of contingency changes and measured both perseverative and non-perseverative errors. Whe...

Both random and perseverative errors underlie WCST deficits in prefrontal patients.

The specificity of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) as a marker of frontal lobe pathology remains controversial. One problem is the lack of a well established correspondence between WCST errors and specific cognitive or neural processes. The conventional scoring of non-perseverative WCST errors does not discriminate between errors related to the efficient test of hypotheses during set shi...

The cerebral correlates of different types of perseveration in the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test.

OBJECTIVES To explore the neural substrates corresponding to the perseverative errors in the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). METHODS The study examined the correlations between the WCST performances and the SPECT measurements of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in subjects with neurodegenerative dementia. Negative non-linear correlations between the rCBF and the two different types of ...

The Utility of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test in Differential Diagnosis of Cognitive Disorders in Iranian Psychiatric Patients and Healthy Subjects

OBJECTIVE The Wisconsin Test Card Sorting Test (WCST) is a neuropsychological test that has been suggested as a more specific test for frontal lobes dysfunctions. This study was designed to determine whether WCST is able to differentiate between Iranian psychiatric patients with cognitive disorders and normal subjects, and whether WCST scores are related to severity of symptoms in depressive an...
